The 49th Annual Buffalo Roundup | Powder House Lodge

 – By

Every September thousands of visitors stampede their way to the southern Black Hills to catch a glimpse of an event as wild and authentic as the West itself during the annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup. This year marks the 49th anniversary of this exciting event and it is sure to be a wild and fun event-filled weekend throughout the Black Hills.

Custer State Park is located just 30 minutes down the road from the Powder House Lodge and is home to one of the largest populations of publicly owned American bison in the world with a herd of more than 1,300 bison that roam the 71,000 acre park. The annual roundup is part of a delicate plan that has been put in place to help maintain a balance between the size of the herd and the land and resources available within the park. During the roundup, experienced cowboys and cowgirls ride horseback through the hills along with park employees and biologists to drive the herd of bison towards the Custer State Park corrals. Once the herd has been successfully corralled, park officials and biologists will continue working to sort, brand, and vaccinate the herd over the next few days following the roundup.

The Custer State Park Roundup is one of the most popular fall events in the Black Hills and attracts more than 14,000 visitors to the area each year. In conjunction with the 49th annual Buffalo Roundup, this year will also mark the 21st anniversary of the Buffalo Roundup Arts Festival. This exciting festival takes place on the grounds of the State Game Lodge in Custer State Park and hosts numerous local and regional vendors selling handcrafted goods, Dutch Oven & chili cook-off competitions, an art auction, and more! Admission to the Buffalo Roundup on Friday, September 26th is free and a Custer State Park entrance pass is not needed, a park entrance pass is required to visit the Arts Festival on September 27th & 28th.

Fall is a great time to get out and explore all that the Black Hills have to offer, and with the changing of the leaves, the crisp fall air, and the rumbling of the buffalo, the 49th Annual Buffalo Roundup & Arts Festival is an excellent time to plan your visit! This “can’t miss” event has been covered by the Los Angeles Times and has also been touted by CNN as one of the 19 Greatest Vacation Experiences. If you would like more information on the exciting event, or if would like to reserve a room or cabin for this event, please give us a call at 1-800-321-0692 or visit us online at www.powderhouselodge.com.  We’ll see you at the roundup!
